11-Year-Old Dev Leads Latest AITA Rankings Declared This Week
Ahmedabad: Eleven-year-old Vadodara boy Dev Javia has become the top-ranked Indian in the under-12 category as per the latest AITA rankings declared this week.
Javia’s success is the result of his hard work and sacrifices made by his parents, Vipul and Dr Vaishali Javia. They travel 4-5 days every week from Vadodara to Ahmedabad for his training at a leading tennis academy in the city under Shrimal Bhatt.
Vaishali gave up her 12-year-old physician career to see her son excel in tennis. The job of Dev's father, an executive in a private company, requires a lot of travelling and so the onus was on the mother to take care of the son's training, travelling and participation in competitive events. "It was a tough decision to take but it was an important one and today I have no regret," said the mother.
The Javia family stayed in Ankleshwar where Dev started showing sparks of brilliance. So they shifted base to Vadodara looking for better playing facility for him. Once he started winning tournaments, the Javias decided to shift again, this time to Ahmedabad, looking for better coaching and training facilities. But now, Dev needs strong financial support to push his career further. As a member of Sports Authority of Gujarat's (SAG) Excellency Centre, Dev gets Rs 5,000 a month to support his career but that is too little given the nature of the sport and the huge expenses involved.
"We have invested in Dev's training everything that we have earned so far. But after a point it will be difficult for us and we need help from other sources. I have approached some organizations as well as individuals at various positions but with little result," said the father. They, however, have got support from Dev's school (Nav Rachna) and Chintan Mehta, who coached him in Vadodara.
